Exploring Newport Beach on an electric bike is one of the easiest ways to see the coast. You cover more ground than walking, you skip the parking hunt, and the motor does the hard work while you enjoy the ocean breeze.
But once you’ve decided to ride, there’s one more choice to make: should you join a guided e-bike tour or rent an e-bike and explore on your own?
Both are great options, and the right one depends on your group, your schedule and how well you know the area. This guide breaks down the differences so you can pick the ride that fits your day.
The Quick Answer
- Choose a guided tour if it’s your first visit, you want local stories and hidden spots, or you’d rather not worry about directions and rules.
- Choose a self-guided rental if you like setting your own pace, already know where you want to go, or want the bike for a full day or longer.
Now let’s look at each option in more detail.
What’s a Guided E-Bike Tour Like?
Our guided Electric Bike Tour is a two and a half hour ride led by a local guide who knows every turn, photo spot and story along the way.
Every tour starts right at our shop on the Balboa Peninsula. From there, you’ll ride down Ocean Front with beautiful homes on one side and the beach on the other. The route then crosses toward Balboa Island’s North Channel, passes the Newport Harbor Yacht Club and heads out to the Back Bay, where the Bay Turnout gives you one of the best views in Newport Beach for photos and selfies.
Tip: Book the tour around sunset and you’ll watch the sun sink into the Pacific as you ride.
Why people love guided tours
You don’t need to plan anything. Your guide handles the route, the timing and the stops. You just ride and enjoy.
You’ll learn the stories. Newport Beach is full of history, local legends and fun facts that you’d miss riding on your own.
You’ll find spots you wouldn’t know about. The Back Bay viewpoint is a local favorite that many visitors never discover.
You’ll ride with confidence. New to e-bikes? Your guide will help you get comfortable and keep the group moving safely.
No worries about the rules. Newport Beach has specific e-bike rules (more on those below), and your guide keeps everyone on the right side of them.
It’s social. Tours are a fun way to share the experience with family, friends or even new people you meet along the way.
Who a guided tour is best for
- First time visitors to Newport Beach
- Riders new to e-bikes
- Families who want a stress free outing
- Groups celebrating a birthday, reunion or team day
- Anyone who wants great photos without hunting for the best spots
What’s a Self-Guided E-Bike Rental Like?
With a self-guided electric bike rental, the bike is yours for as long as you book it, and the route is completely up to you.
Our fleet includes comfortable Fuji Sanibel and E-Crosstown electric bikes, and our e-bikes typically get about 20 to 21 miles per charge depending on terrain and how you ride. That’s plenty for a full day of cruising around the peninsula, Balboa Island and the harbor.
Rentals range from hourly to daily, weekly and even monthly options, so you can grab a bike for a quick spin or keep it for your whole vacation.
Why people love self-guided rentals
Total freedom. Stop for tacos, spend an hour at the beach or change plans on a whim. Nobody’s waiting on you.
Flexible timing. Ride early in the morning, midday or whenever fits your schedule.
Great for longer stays. Multi-day and weekly rentals let you use your e-bike as your main way to get around, which is a huge perk on the peninsula, where parking can be tough to find.
Budget friendly for longer rides. If you want several hours or a full day on the bike, a rental usually gives you more ride time for your money.
Perfect for repeat visitors. If you already know your favorite spots, you don’t need a guide to find them.
Who a self-guided rental is best for
- Visitors staying several days on the peninsula
- Confident riders who enjoy exploring solo
- Couples or friends who want to set their own pace
- Locals and repeat visitors
- Anyone who wants to ride for more than a couple of hours

Know the Rules Before You Ride
Whether you ride with a guide or on your own, it helps to know the local rules. Newport Beach updated its e-bike regulations in January 2026, and the city takes enforcement seriously.
A few key points for visitors:
- E-bikes are allowed on the oceanfront boardwalk, but you must stay within the posted speed limit.
- The boardwalk speed limit is 8 mph. Slow down, especially near the piers where foot traffic is heavy.
- No riding on the sand. Bikes and e-bikes are not allowed on the sand at city beaches.
- Ride respectfully around pedestrians. Give walkers plenty of room and use your bell when passing.
On a guided tour, your guide keeps the group within these rules. On a self-guided rental, our team will go over the basics before you head out, so just ask if you have questions.
Can’t Decide? Try Both!
Plenty of our guests do exactly that. Take the guided tour on your first day to get your bearings, learn the best spots and feel comfortable on the bike. Then rent an e-bike for the rest of your stay and go back to the places you loved at your own pace.
Prefer a classic ride? We also offer a two hour guided beach cruiser tour past the Balboa Fun Zone, the Balboa Pier and the Newport Balboa Bike Trail. See all our guided tours for kayak, paddleboard and Segway options too.
